Netflix Announces Gudetama Adaptation, Starring Lazy Egg


Netflix announces Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure, a new hybrid series featuring the Japanese “lazy egg” character Gudetama.

Gudetama, the Japanese cartoon character otherwise known as “the lazy egg”, is heading to Netflix in a new hybrid series set to premiere later this year.

On Twitter, the official netflix geek account released a trailer for Gudetama: an irresistible adventure, which is set to debut on the platform later this year. The series follows Gudetama, “a listless egg who has given up on life, knowing that all that awaits her is someone’s plate, is forced out of the refrigerator by the enthusiastic and overbearing chick Shakipiyo. Together, the strange couple embarks on a quest to find their mother. »

Created by Emi Nagashima (better known as AMY), Gudetama is owned by Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty. A depressed and yellow egg yolk, Gudetama often laments the difficulties of life. Nagashima, then 26, created the character in 2013 as part of a food contest organized by Sanrio among its employees. A Gudetama anime series premiered in 2014 as part of the Japanese TV show Asa Chan!. The series had aired around 1,000 one-minute episodes as of 2017.

Over the years, there have been countless Gudetama merchandise items like pencils, suitcases, and a mobile game, not to mention Gudetama-themed clothing lines, restaurants, a cosmetics line, an EVA airplane Air and a Seibu Railway train. Gudetama’s character has even extended to the world of comics. In 2019, Sanrio partnered with Oni Press for a series of graphic novels featuring the lazy egg, beginning with Gudetama: The love of sloths by Wook-Jin Clark, which was released in early 2020.

“Gudetama is EVERYWHERE!” Sarah Gaydos, then-editor of Oni Press, said at the time, “We’re totally egg-cited to bring it into the world of comics, and creator Wook-Jin Clark is the perfect collaborator. Gudetama is irreverent, relatable, and lovable, and I can’t wait for everyone to see how Wook-Jin brings those qualities to life in the comic medium.”
