When Washington State University Libraries open on July 12, emergency temporary access to their printed materials in the HathiTrust Digital Library will end. HathiTrust is a non-profit collaboration of academic and research libraries preserving over 17 million digitized articles.
WSU Libraries gained access to HathiTrust collections in April 2020 following closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Between April. On June 24, 2020 and June 22, 2021, 3,839 unique books were viewed online 6,442 times in total with 2,414 additional renewals. HathiTrust’s Temporary Emergency Access Service (ETAS) allows special access to HathiTrust member libraries that experience a temporary or unintentional disruption of normal operations, requiring the library to be closed to its customers or the restriction of its services. access to the print collection.
The service allows users of member libraries to gain legal access to specific digital materials in HathiTrust that correspond to physical books held by their own library. ETAS enables many HathiTrust member libraries to continue to support the teaching, learning and research mission of their institutions during these service disruptions.
